Marks & Spencer launches carbon neutral lingerie

In with the eco-friendly fashion movement, retail giant Marks & Spencer is launching ‘Autograph Leaves’ - a new lingerie collection including four bras, three knickers and a set of suspenders that have had their carbon footprint independently calculated by the Carbon Trust Footprinting Certification Company.

The calculation takes into account each item’s complete life cycle - from manufacture to transportation and even the energy customers use washing and drying their underwear. Autograph Leaves was manufactured at the M&S eco-model factory in Thurulie, Sri Lanka, where waste initiatives were implemented to help reduce the factory’s carbon footprint by 33%.

M&S Head of Lingerie Technology Paschal Little observed that, as the UK’s lingerie market leader, “M&S should lead the way in exploring new and more sustainable manufacturing options”.

Thurulie’s local community and wildlife will also benefit from this initiative. M&S is planting over 6,000 trees in the desolate land between the Kanneliya and Polgahakanda forest reserves, thus creating more natural habitat for the animals and also helping farmers and their families, since 25% of trees will be income generating such as mango and lime trees.

These sustainability commitments are all part of the Marks & Spencer’s Plan A programme. The retailer has pledged that each of its 2.7 billion individual products will have a Plan A attribute by 2020, with a target of 50% by 2015.

The Autograph Leaves collection is available online from April 13 and will be in stores from this weekend.
