Unconventional footwear and unexpected collabs were top trends in 2021, says StockX

Online resale platform StockX has released a round-up of some of the hottest trends of 2021, highlighting a boom in interest in non-conventional shoes and the popularity of collaborations between contrasting brands as two of the most noteworthy developments to have made their mark on the resale market over the last 12 months.

Consumers had already begun to show increased interest in unconventional footwear offering improved comfort, such as clogs and slides, in 2020, but the trend accelerated significantly in 2021, according to StockX. Trades of Crocs clogs, for example, totaled more than 35,000 on the platform this year, while Yeezy slides have seen 250% trade growth year over year. Yeezy’s opinion-splitting Foam RNNR model has also seen phenomenal growth, with annual trades up 3,400% compared to 2020.

Something of a pioneer in unconventional footwear, Birkenstock hasn’t missed out on the trend either. The German sandal maker’s creative partnerships with the likes of Californian streetwear label Stüssy and NYC-based fashion brand Proenza Schouler have helped stoke renewed buzz around its products, leading trades of Birkenstock’s collaborative clogs and sandals to increase 300% year over year on StockX.

And those aren’t the only collabs that consumers have been lapping up this year. Indeed, unexpected collaborations bringing together unlikely partners have generated particular interest.

Combining the worlds of couture and camping, collaborative Gucci x The North Face pieces boast an average resale price of $1,400 for the last 12 months, while the average price premium for items co-created by cult streetwear label Supreme and iconic New York jeweler Tiffany & Co. was 140% for the same period.

Better known for its limited-edition releases, Yeezy generated more than 17,000 trades on StockX in 2021 through its collaboration with mass-market staple Gap. Finally, over 4,00 trades on the platform this year involved pieces born from the creative partnership between cozy footwear specialist Ugg and chic Telfar.

It’s been a strong year for Telfar all round, as the brand’s shoppers established themselves as the undeniable It bag of 2021, thanks, in part, to a cohort of A-list fans. Beyoncé was spotted with a Telfar bag on July 7, sending searches for the brand on StockX soaring 500% the next day, a development which the platform identified as one of the key moments of the year.

Other major moments highlighted by StockX include Kamala Harris’ nephew-in-law, Nikolas Ajagu, wearing Dior Jordan 1s to the presidential inauguration in January. This resulted in traffic on the StockX product page for the shoes rising 200% compared to the previous day, while searches for “Dior Jordan” increased 280%.

Average monthly trades of Nike LeBron sneakers also tripled in July, reaching their highest trade volume on StockX in two years, following the reissuing of the Nike LeBron South Beach 8 to celebrate the release of the new Space Jam movie, in which LeBron James played the starring role.

Although StockX now hosts trades in a wide range of categories, including apparel, accessories, collectibles and even electronics, its roots are firmly in sneakerhead culture. It’s no surprise, then, that the platform also gave special attention to the top traded sneaker of the year in its annual trend round-up. In 2021, the honor went to the Nike Air Force 1, which has seen more than 100,000 total trades over the last 12 months.

Elsewhere in sneaker trends, StockX highlighted the resurgence of Jordan 2s, the popularity of which is on the up after a series of hot collaborations. Looking at all Jordan 2 models released before 2020, the platform found that the average appreciation in value of the shoes was 90% over the last two years, a figure which, as pointed out by StockX, beats the S&P 500’s growth of 40% in the same period.

It was Jordan 4s, however, that dominated another trend spotlighted by StockX. Four different colorways of the Jordan 4 Retro Golf shoe featured in the top five biggest golf releases of 2021, alongside the Nike x Drake NOCTA Golf Crewneck Top in green. Collectively, these five items accounted for more than 10,000 trades on StockX in 2021.
