Global beauty tech specialist Perfect Corp (the company behind the YouCam Makeup app) has linked up with Smashbox Cosmetics on a key tech and personalisation development. Their new partnership combines Perfect Corp’s artificial intelligence (AI)-powered face analyser technology with Smashbox’s Shape Matters Methodology and eye products for a launch they’re calling “groundbreaking”.

The new Smashbox Eye Genie in the YouCam Makeup App will mix the firm’s “studio artistry with innovative technology” to create an “easy-to-use digital tool”.

It means consumers will be able to get personalised make-up recommendations based on their own unique eye shape.

The two companies see the launch as “an important step forward in the evolution of retail technology, solving the challenge of bringing traditional off-line experiences online through the implementation of experiential AR and AI”.

It’s said to be a first-of-its-kind” development that can automatically detect the shape of the user’s eyes, using a live camera feed. From there it will recommend varying Smashbox Cover Shot Palettes and accompanying eye looks based on the eye shape and created by Smashbox eye experts and professional make-up artists.

The company clearly believes this will help drive sales as it says users will be able to “experiment with different colour combinations based on their preference in a matter of seconds”.

Smashbox said its Shape Matters Methodology resulted from years of extensive research that included the analysis of multiple different eye shapes. But the important development was combining it with Perfect Corp’s AI deep-learning technology through 3D face mesh, which identifies facial landmarks to recognise individual attributes.

Perfect Corp founder and CEO Alice Chang said: “We’re seeing the power of AI and AR at work as the make-up and beauty shopping experience continues to evolve, and we’re pleased to play a role in Smashbox’s ‘phygital’ transformation.”
