The man fell from one of the upper floors shortly after 7pm and paramedics and a trauma doctor were unable to save his life.

Selfridges said in a statement: “Following an incident in-store last night, the emergency services attended and we have been assisting them with their enquiries. Selfridges Birmingham will remain closed today, reopening on Wednesday 12th January.

The store has a large open area inside with several floors of galleries overlooking it. That’s a popular design concept for major department stores and some malls.

It’s unclear at present whether the fall was a tragic accident or deliberate but the local police confirmed that the death is not being treated as suspicious and will be referred to the coroner.
