A spokesperson for the affordable clothing brand confirmed the appointment on Tuesday, adding that Mooney joined the company on 15 January.

He will be based at Primark’s head office In Dublin and oversee the brand’s merchandising activities for womenswear across its ROI, Southern European and USA markets.

“James brings a wealth of international experience to Primark having previously held a number of senior merchandising roles at Arcadia Group,” said the spokesperson.

Mooney spent 10 years at Arcadia, rising from head of merchandising at Burton to trading director of Topshop and Topman.

He left the business in April last year following a series of high-profile resignations at the retail company, including Mary Homer, who stepped down as managing director of Topshop in March.
