At the recent assembly, Luxottica's board appointed Francesco Milleri as Vice-President, with the mission of "aiding and assisting" the group's founder and Executive Chairman, Leonardo Del Vecchio, "in carrying out his functions." Milleri will be working alongside other Vice-President, Francesco Francavilla.

The appointment confirms the rising influence of Francesco Milleri, 56, who joined the global eyewear leader a few years ago.

He was co-opted on to the board of directors in early March, exactly a month after the departure of joint CEO Adil Khan. The latter was replaced by Leonardo Del Vecchio, who became Executive President, while Massimo Vian remained in his post as CEO.

Francesco Milleri is an external consultant specialised in IT, and is considered close to Leonardo Del Vecchio and his wife Nicoletta Zampillo. In 2014, the Italian media pointed him out as the man responsible for the departure of the previous CEO, Enrico Cavatorta.

"The Vice-President is only needed when I cannot be present at the company. In that case, there will be someone who can sign documents for me," stated Leonardo Del Vecchio to the media during the assembly.
