Koibird to launch Loretta Caponi collab this week

London-based brand Koibird is linking up with Italian heritage brand Loretta Caponi for a collab collection that launches on Thursday.

Koibird x Loretta Caponi

The premium-priced collection comprises a selection of hand-embroidered dresses, co-ords and sweats that merge Loretta Caponi’s traditional techniques, such as catanella stich and smocking, with Koibird’s “whismical” and  “playful tone of voice”.

It was co-designed by Koibird founder Belma Gaudio and the Italian brand’s creative director Lucia Caponi. They wanted to heighten the nostalgia factor through print with the collection sourcing rare archive Loretta Caponi prints from the 1970s and 80s, as well as using retro-influenced the fabrics and silhouettes that also work well today.

The collection “looks to dreamily evoke the nostalgic European summers of yesteryear, nodding to a bygone era of sun-drenched decadence with a combined sentiment of melancholy and hope”.

That translates into “floaty, ruched silhouettes in printed linens and light cottons [to] heighten the ethereal sense of tactility within the capsule”.

And “with its tongue pressed firmly in its cheek, ‘Koibird Athletic’ motifs are supplemented by nods to summer leisure sports. Embroidered tennis balls decorate terry cloth playsuits, with delicate ribbing and subtle zip finishes working to champion holiday activewear during a summer where sporting celebrations have been largely jeopardised”.

The companies said that “blending tactility with utility, the partnership continues this approach in its expansion into loungewear”, with porcelain-coloured sweats in soft jersey. And a detachable embroidered collar is a key accessory, “allowing its wearer to dress up or dress down to suit the mood or occasion”.

The palette features summer shades such as Syracuse oranges and lime greens to “disrupt the smattering of classic florals” with the colour focus also being seen in the historic catanella stitch technique that allows up to 100 colour threads to blend at once.

Belma Gaudio said of this: “In collaborating with Loretta Caponi, we really wanted to consider what the marriage between the house’s commitment to heritage, quality and femininity and Koibird’s kaleidoscopic approach to self-expression would look like. We have worked with the team since our inception and wanted to create a collection that felt timeless, but also relevant to the mood of the moment.”
