Klarna’s UK boss Alex Marsh is stepping down from the buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) financier for personal reasons. A replacement has yet to be announced.

Klarna

He leaves the Swedish company after four-and-a-half years at the helm, describing his time at Klarna as “nothing short of phenomenal” to City AM.

However, he said that a recent family tragedy has “brought home that life is short… this experience has underlined the importance of prioritising what matters most – our family and loved ones.”

Marsh joined Klarna in January 2019 from financial services company Close Brothers, where he held the role of managing director of retail finance. He moved up from financial director to become head of UK ops in 2020. At the same time he co-founded non-profit organisation Charterpath that connects accountants to volunteering opportunities.

And his time at the business has been one of huge growth both for Klarna itself and for BNPL in general with a huge number of UK consumers now using it for fashion purchases across the price scale.

For instance, he said that since he joined, the customer base has grown from 1.5 million to a 18 million adding that the company “will no doubt continue to trail-blaze in the world of payments, shopping and banking.”

And a Klarna spokesperson said: “We are extremely grateful for all that Alex achieved during his time with us and are excited to follow his future journey.”
