JD Sports opens revamped Go Outdoors store as it invests in chain
JD Sports-owned Go Outdoors may have found store rents challenging in recent periods, but the company is still investing heavily in its stores following its administration filing and re-purchase by its parent company.
A ‘new’ megastore (actually a refurbished location) opens Thursday at Festival Park in Stoke with the company saying the opening comes “amid a nationwide boom in outdoor activities”.
The store has seen “large investment following 10 successful years of trading in the city”.
The company is positioning it as the “go-to destination” in the area for outdoor enthusiasts and has also added a new fishing department to the mix.
The 24,000 square foot store stocks a variety of brands, such as Rab, OEX, Berghaus, Eurohike, HiGear and Freedom Trail.
The outdoors business has been the most challenged part of the successful JD Sports empire and the lockdown earlier this year came as a heavy blow to the sector. This led to the chain being put into administration in June, although JD quickly bought it back.
The retail giant had been unhappy about some of the rent deals it was tied into but stressed that it still saw a future for the chain and particularly for physical stores. The news about the investment in the Stoke store seems to bear this out.
