This is a new role and will see Maxwell responsible for enhancing the retailer's corporate sustainability commitments and values and making sure they're embedded into House of Fraser's business strategy and operations.

Commenting on her role, Dr Maxwell said: “Strong sustainability performance is essential for good business in the 21st century. I’m very excited to lead House of Fraser in shaping the future of sustainable retail.”

Over the last 20 years Maxwell, who holds a PhD in Environmental Science and a Masters in Environmental Economics & Law, has worked with high profile brands and retailers, including Nike and John Smedley, on environment and sustainability initiatives. She has also led multi-stakeholder coalitions, including the Sustainable Clothing Roadmap, to drive sustainable production, consumption and the transition to a green economy, House of Fraser said.

Nigel Oddy, House of Fraser CEO said: “Dorothy is one of the true experts in her field and we are delighted to welcome her to the House of Fraser management team. We understand that our success is directly linked to the approach we take to our customers, the communities we operate in, the environment, our employees and all of our partners and suppliers. Dorothy’s expertise will be invaluable in supporting us in these areas.”
