Hong Kong tycoon Cheng Yu Tung ups Giordano stake to 15%

May 20 - Hong Kong tycoon Cheng Yu Tung has increased his stake in casual wear chain Giordano International Ltd to 15.03 percent for about HK$39.5 million ($5.08 million), according to a disclosure from the Hong Kong bourse.

Cheng bought 6.75 million shares of Giordano at an average price of HK$5.85 per share on May 17, according to the disclosure.

Last week, Cheng Yu Tung bought 218.358 million shares, or 14.58 percent of Giordano, at an average price of HK$4.81 each for HK$1.05 billion.

Cheng is the chairman of property group New World Development Co Ltd and owns jewellery chain Chow Tai Fook.

Giordano on Thursday posted a 26 percent year-on-year rise in first quarter sales to HK$1.42 billion. Its gross profit increased 29.6 percent to HK$823 million and gross margin rose to 58.2 percent from 56.5 percent a year ago.

Shares of the casual wear chain jumped 6.2 percent to HK$5.84 on Friday morning versus a 0.19 percent gain for the Hang Seng Index .
