Ecoalf, a sustainable Spanish brand, is set to launch in Japan. The brand has signed a partnership with a clothing brand and retail specialist Sanyo Shokai that will see it open its first flagship store in Tokyo in early 2020.

The joint venture will seek to accelerate the adoption of sustainable fashion in Japan through Ecoalf’s sustainability and innovation expertise and the Japanese retailer’s savoir faire. The first outlet in the market, scheduled to open to the public next year, is “part of an omnichannel strategy focusing on online retailing and physical stores around the world,” said the Spanish company.

“In Japan we see a market with great opportunities for growth, particularly in the sustainable fashion space. Sanyo’s extensive experience and roots in the Japanese market makes this the perfect partnership for Ecoalf’s successful expansion in Japan,” said Javier Goyeneche, president and founder of Ecoalf.

Isao Iwata, president of Sanyo Shokai Ltd, added about the firm’s commitment to sustainability: “With this partnership, Sanyo and Ecoalf will build a new business model with low environmental impact to promote a sustainable society for the next generation and the future.”

Founded in 1943, Sanyo specialises in the manufacture and sale of men’s and women’s clothing to department stores and specialty retailers. It also operates a number of directly-managed stores across Japan. In 2017, the business reported an increase in sales to 62.54 billion yen (about 524 million euros).

Ecoalf, which has recently announced a 4.5 million euros capital increase to support its growth strategy, is undergoing an expansion in France. The brand trades from standalone stores in Malaga, Barcelona, Berlin and Madrid. Established in 2010, the Spanish label is majority owned by Luxembourg fund Manor Group, which holds a 65.9% stake in the business. According to its latest available accounts, Ecoalf generated sales of 4.13 million euros in 2017, reporting a 14.7% increase on the previous year.
