Peer-to-peer secondhand fashion marketplace Depop is boosting staff numbers in the UK following surging demand during lockdown.

By year-end it will add almost a quarter more staff members in Britain taking its total to 320+. That means it will employ 350 people globally by that time with the firm having offices in London, Manchester, Los Angeles, New York and Sydney.

The news comes after it had already added 60 jobs to cope with the increased demand it has seen this year.

Depop has proved a hit with young consumers whose interest in resale, vintage and peer-to-peer business models means that around a third of all consumers aged 16 to 24 in Britain have tried it out.

And it’s a hit with charities too. Only last week the British Heart Foundation said it would boost its activities on the platform after seeing success this year.

The company also this year unveiled a collaboration collection with Richard Quinn and last year opened its first physical space via a pop-up in Selfridges

A little over a year ago it raised $62 million in its latest funding round and said it was targeting faster international expansion with a particular focus on the US.

But the events of 2020 have boosted its growth in ways it could never have expected and it has been one of few companies to come out of the coronavirus crisis with a larger business.
