British leather goods maker the Cambridge Satchel Company has secured funding of $21 million from Index Ventures, backers of fashion retailers ASOS, Net-a-Porter and Nasty Gal.

What started as a from-home business in 2008 has now blossomed world-renowned brand, working to preserve British manufacturing. Sold in more than 100 countries, the Cambridge Satchel company is looking to use the investment to strengthen management and to push into new markets, such as China, and to plough more deeply into existing markets like the U.S.

The investment will also enable the company to advance its digital presence by developing new language options for its site, a skillset that founder Julie Deane believes Index Ventures to have.

"Digital is at the heart of everything we do, which is why we are so excited to be entering into this partnership with Index, who have no equals in the digital arena," said Deane.

Giuseppe Zocco, co-founder and partner at Index Ventures, added: "The continuing rise of The Cambridge Satchel Company is one of Europe's most exciting entrepreneurial stories. With vision and determination, Julie turned a boot-strapped company, born without resources or support, into one that is so fearlessly taking on the world.”
