Boots non-exec chair Elizabeth Fagan steps down

Feb 6, 2020

Elizabeth Fagan, the non-executive chair of health and beauty retailer Boots UK, is leaving the company after almost 14 years.

Fagan, who received a CBE in the Queen’s 2020 New Year’s honours list for her services to gender equality in business, held many senior roles within Boots, including senior vice-president and managing director. She is understood to have left her role with the Nottingham-headquartered company on Friday 31 January.

The retail chain thanked her for her ‘significant’ contribution to the business over her long tenure.

In 2006, she was named managing director of Boots Opticians, and a year later she took over the role of executive marketing director for Boots UK. Fagan is credited with facilitating the development of the successful ‘Here come the girls’ Christmas TV ad, which heralded a total brand repositioning in 2017.

When Alliance Boots merged with Walgreens in 2014 to form the Walgreens Boots Alliance, Fagan became the managing director of international retail, driving the development of pharmacy retail businesses in Latin America, Asia and Europe.

She was promoted to managing director in June 2016, becoming the historic beauty giant’s first female boss. In this role, she led all of the Boots businesses across the UK and the Republic of Ireland.

"On Seb James’s appointment to lead Boots in 2018, Elizabeth became non-executive chairman, where she continued to push forward the evolution of the Nottingham Enterprise Zone focusing on local innovation and economic growth, whilst also continuing to drive positive change in and for the communities of Nottingham through our many CSR initiatives,” the business said in a statement.

"Throughout her time with Boots, Elizabeth has delivered a number of strategic partnerships, including the award winning and highly respected relationship with Macmillan Cancer Support, that truly engaged and benefitted our colleagues, customers and communities at large."
