Spanish designer label Bimba y Lola has set up a board of directors, comprising eight members. Brand co-founders Uxía and María Domínquez have been named as president and vice-president.

“The creation of a board of directors represents an important step towards strengthening the company’s structure, and will be key to drive the strategic plan,” said the company in a press release. A group of ‘valuable’ independent professionals has been recruited, with the board expected to further develop the company’s strategy while preserving its family character.

José Manuel Martínez, CEO, said the board will be fundamental to drive international growth and implement changes within the organisation. The executive, who took over the top role at Bimba y Lola in November 2018, will also sit on the board.

Learning from Inditex and Desigual

Joining as an independent director is the former CEO and vice-president of Inditex, José María Castellano, who spent eight years at the top of the retail giant between 1997 and 2005.

A veteran of the Spanish industry, Castellano also served as president of  telecommunications company ONO between 2006 and 2009, and led NCG Bank as president from 2011 to 2014. He currently sits on the board of companies including Grupo Puig, Esprit Holdings Limited and Grupo Rothschild.

Other board members include Cristina Trujillo and Eva Hernando, both appointed as non-executive independent directors. Cristina Trujillo, who has more than 20 years of experience in the fashion and accessories market, is an expert in international expansion. She was the CEO of Etnia Barcelona, a Spanish brand, and served as a board member at Desigual, where she spent 11 years.

Eva Hernando brings 20 years of experience working in commercial law, mergers and acquisitions and corporate operations. She is currently a legal partner at Grant Thornton in Galicia, a role she will combine with her new non-executive position at Bimba y Lola.

Jesús Domínguez, the co-founder of brands including Bimba y Lola and Adolfo Domínguez, completes the board of directors alongside finance expert Fernando Martínez.

In 2018, Bimba y Lola reported an 11.4% increase in revenues to €201.2 million. Founded in 2005, the brand has currently over 290 stores in 17 countries, including 168 locations in Spain.
