Back-to-school catwalk beauty trends for fall

Published
Aug 22, 2016

With summer drawing to a close, it's time to turn our attention to the new beauty trends for fall. In case the Autumn/Winter 16/17 shows seem too long ago to recall, here is a reminder of the defining catwalk looks seen unveiled back in February.

Giorgio Armani - Giorgio Armani

Hair

Voluminous locks truly were the mane event during AW16, with attention-grabbing styles stealing the show. Make like Gucci, whose models sported a tousled, freshly-washed look, or go for a more conceptual vibe and channel Rick Owens' hair nests. Don't be afraid to crimp or wave for added texture, Manish Arora-style, and pile it up high on your head for an even bigger silhouette.

Another major trend for this season is the curl -- so forget the straightening irons and opt for a bit of a twist. The catwalks proved that anything goes: Altazurra offered up wild, bouncing curls but Giorgio Armani provided a softer alternative with cute ringlets. If this is all a bit too far out of your comfort zone then try a gentle wave, or pin your hair to your head in a wavy pattern, like Vivienne Westwood did, in a nod to the trend.

Eyes

Fall is set to be a grungy affair, so the bigger, darker and smudgier your eye makeup, the better. Try out the thick-winged cat-eye that was on show at Saint Laurent by flicking black liner up towards your temple, and smudge your shadow a little higher -- approaching your brows if you dare -- like at Sacai. The great thing about this look is that it doesn't have to be perfect for you to pull it off.

Brows, however, are getting lighter. Multiple fashion houses camouflaged or lightened their models' eyebrows for the shows, either bleaching them or covering them up with makeup. If this feels a little extreme for everyday wear, try going easier on your brow pencils and shadows for a less dramatically defined arch. Pair the look with grungy eye makeup for an on-trend contrast.

Lips

Dark lips are still very much in, with 'glam-Goth' ruling the runways at the AW16 shows. Black lipstick was championed by Rihanna, Dior and Marc Jacobs. It's been seen on the likes of Katy Perry and Kylie Jenner in the intervening months, but a deep red tone or a dark brown shade will work just as well.
