Wang succeeds his sister-in-law Aimie Wang and his mother Ying Wang as CEO and Chairman, respectively. Aimie and Ying co-founded the company with Alexander and his brother Dennis in 2005, and they are both stepping down from their positions though they will remain with the company as board members and shareholders.

Alexander said in a statement, "I want to thank my family, Ying, and Aimie for their tireless efforts toward building the business we have today. The business side has always come naturally to me, and with my full-time return to New York, I want to focus on my brand’s strategic growth. Now is the right time to fully synchronize the creative and business aspects of the company and to continue strengthening the dialogue we have with our customers. It has always been my goal to create brand value, and to be a brand with integrity and purpose."

Wang left Balenciaga in 2015 after having served as Creative Director for almost three years. He parted ways with the atelier in order to focus on the growth of his company.

In addition, Alexander Wang appointed his aunt, Caroline Wang, as Executive Vice Chairman and former DKNY President Mary Wang (no relation) as Executive Vice President. Caroline joins the company from IBM.

In May 2016, Rodrigo Bazan stepped down as President of Alexander Wang after serving for 5 years. Wang personally selected Bazan to serve as President, and he parted ways with the company to serve as CEO of Thom Browne.
