Salvatore Ferragamo published a trial sustainability statement last year, and has now released its very first official eco-sustainability statement. It can be viewed by the public in the section dedicated to corporate social responsibility on Ferragamo's website at http://csr.ferragamo.com.

The 100-page statement is chiefly dedicated to a presentation of the Florence-based company, listed on the Milan Stock Exchange. The luxury label specialised in footwear employs a staff of 4,000 and is present in 90 countries.

In the statement, Ferragamo remarked how it has always been active on the sustainable development front, adopting an Ethics code in 2008, which it is now in the process of reviewing.

The company has created a working group, called the 'Green Team', in order to further flesh out its sustainability effort. The team's task is to organise all of the company's eco-responsible activities, through an action plan to be presented every year to the board of directors.

The team's mission, according to Salvatore Ferragamo, is "to improve working conditions and the external and internal impact of our operations, facilitating a direct relationship with the local context at all levels, both environmental and human."

This first statement has identified 22 issues, from which the group's priorities on the sustainable development front are to be developed and defined. "In the course of 2015 and starting from these macro-objectives, the company has brought to fruition some important initiatives," stated the luxury label.

Among them, promoting volunteering activities among its staff, the extension of flexibility benefits to employees and their families, sustainable mobility initiatives, the adoption of ecological construction standards, etc.

The statement notably quantified the reductions achieved between 2014 and 2015 in terms of energy and water consumption, as well as in that of materials such as paper, carton, etc.

The statement also highlighted the group's focus on the manufacturing chain, ensuring a strong degree of integration between the brand and its suppliers, an increase in the number of quality checks and an engagement in favour of the chemical safety of the products used. On this, Salvatore Ferragamo noted how "the company is about to adopt an internal Restricted Substance List."

Finally, the label remarked on its engagement in favour of culture and the promotion of the arts "in all their forms and expressions." The company also announced in its sustainability statement how the Salvatore Ferragamo museum in Florence has obtained the ISO 14064 certification. The museum has thus become "the first sustainable company exhibition area in Italy."
