ROME, Dec 4, 2009 (AFP) - Italian police arrested 11 businessmen suspected of embezzling state and European aid and seized assets worth 90 million euros in the southern city of Crotone, local carabinieri said Friday 4 December.

"Eleven people dealing in property, luxury goods and food products were arrested," Captain Domenico Dente told AFP.

Items confiscated included company shareholdings, bank accounts and a jewellery store in central Rome, he said.

Those arrested are accused of criminal association, fraud and illicitly obtaining public funds, in particular investment grants made by the Italian state and the European Union, he added.
