Design Miami/Basel opened on Tuesday with a special installation curated by Thom Browne for the 2017 Design at Large platform.

The 2017 Design at Large installation curated by Thom Browne - Design Miami/Basel

The American designer is exhibiting a grid of the most important desks from the last one hundred years, including pieces from Jean Prouvé and Ron Arad, as well as a choreographed performance that marks the current shifts in traditional work styles, question the desk typology and reconsider today’s adapted styles of working. The installation is displayed beside an installation from the designer's fall 2014 men's runway show.

Browne is the first fashion designer to oversee the exhibition. He picks up at Design Miami/Basel from last year’s installation curator, Cabana Magazine founder Martina Mondadori Sartogo.

In addition to opening Browne’s installation, Design Miami/Basel unveiled the 2017 Design Curios Program featuring 10 focused vignettes created specifically to debut at the fair. The Curio spaces provide installations that draw from artists and designers whose work intersects with film, fashion, jewelry, architecture, porcelain and performance.

This year’s Design Curios Program includes the work of Robert Goossens, Atelier Swarovski Home, Table.Video, Elias Hansen and Oscar Tuazon, Teatro Mollino, Dominic Harris and Oliver Smart, Alex Israel, Supergufram and Studio Job, Sokyo Gallery with Kentaro Kawabata, Satoshi Kino, Eiko, Kishi, Toru Kurokawa and Heechang Yoon, and a partnership between Scholten & Baijings, Japanese architect Sano Fumihiko and kimono designer Takahashi Hiroko.

Design Miami/Basel, the global forum for design that occurs alongside Art Basel Miami and Switzerland, will be open to the public at Hall 1 Süd, Messe Basel, Switzerland from June 13 through June 18, 2017.
